Keeping Your Pet Safe During Halloween

Keeping Your Pet Safe During Halloween

Everyone knows Halloween is a fun and festive time for children and adults. It can also be fun for the pets in our lives. And just like we need to keep safe Halloween night, it is essential to keep your pets safe as well. It could be scary and stressful for your dog to have strangers knock on the door in costumes or deal with the constant knocking or ringing at the door. If your dog is like mine, they will be in protection mode the whole night. There are other hazards to be aware of, but keep in mind they are preventable.

Safety and Love First

It’s no surprise that Halloween candy is meant for the kids and not the dog that includes suckers. Most Holloween candies contain an artificial sweetener called xylitol. This can be dangerous to dogs by causing a drop in blood sugar as well as loss of coordination and seizures. Chocolate is another type of candy to keep away from your pet. Chocolate can be lethal and cause death in your pet. Not only that, but wrappers, strings, and sticks from candies can be dangerous causing a blockage possibly requiring surgery.
Keeping your dog away from the door might not be a bad idea. Keeping your dog's stress levels down, fear, and unexpected aggression to a minimum is best for the safety and health of your pet. Securing your dog indoors will also keep them from being victims of cruel people. It’s unfortunate that there are people who are willing to tease, hurt, steal, and sadly kill pets on Halloween night. Black cats are more at risk of enduring such cruelty.
There's no doubt that pets look cute dresses up, but it can also be stressful for them. It is recommended that your dog's costume doesn't restrict their movement, sight, ability to breath, or bark. Make sure there aren't small pieces for them to choke on and have then get used to the costume before Halloween to ensure they are comfortable in it.
If your fur-baby happens to escape and becomes lost, the best thing to guarantee their return is having proper identification. Don’t take the collar or tags off your dog to fit their costume. Be sure the information is up to date or to be extra safe, have your pet microchipped for a permanent identification.
