Ways to Keep Your Pets Safe During a Tornado
Mother Nature can be sweet, but there are times when she can be a little ruthless. The city of Abilene recently experienced an EF-2 tornado that was 300 yards in width and covered 2.3 miles. So many people were affected by this incident, some lost their business or home. When disaster hits, you rush to get you and your family to safety, but it can be difficult to remember the family pet. During this scary time, your pet may flee, making it hard to find them in this crucial time. Here are a few things you can do to make it easier to keep your pet safe in severe weather.
Things to do Before, During, and After a Tornado
- Identification is Key- Be sure the info on your pet's tags are current; this includes the phone number and address.
- Preparedness Kits- This should include drinking water, food, pet first-aid kit, extra leash, flashlight, blankets. Check out ASPCA.org for a more detailed list and helpful information.
- Where Does Your Pet Hide- It’s essential to know your pets hiding spots and even more important to assign a person to each pet. It will make it easier in a time of crisis to extract them safely.
- Evacuation Plan- Have an evac plan for your family. Practice it every few months and include the pets in your mock evac. Be sure to put your pets in a carrier and place them in a safe room or under a sturdy piece of furniture.
- When the Storm Passes- Only exit after the storm has passed. Assess the damage before bringing your pets out. Keep them away from food, water, or other liquids. They could be contaminated from the passing storm. Also keep them away from any debris, such as downed power lines.
