You Should Adopt Your Next Pet

You Should Adopt Your Next Pet

Every year million’s of dogs and cats are euthanized due to space, too many animals coming into shelters, and not enough people considering adoption. There are several misconceptions about adopted animals that turn people away and most decide to buy puppies or kittens instead. The Human Society listed a few great reasons to adopt the next time you're looking for your first or next family member. So get up and head over to the next adoption event or your local shelter.

Don’t Shop, Adopt!

There are millions of pets being “put down” every year, but by adopting you save a life. Pets become an essential part of your family, and by adopting, you open up shelter space for other animals who need it. Keep in mind that not all animals in shelters are troubled or are there because they did something wrong. A lot of animals are there because of a human problem like a move or a divorce. Many are already housetrained and used to living with families or other animals, are healthy and happy. So you are more than likely to adopt a great pet. Typically when you adopt, the cost of spay/neuter, first vaccinations (and sometimes even microchipping!) is included in the adoption price, which can save you money. You may also save on housebreaking and training expenses as well.
You may come across people selling puppies or kitten online, but be careful. It is possible you are buying from a person running a “puppy mill,” which are horrible. A puppy mill is a factory-style breeding facility that put profit above the welfare of the animals. Dogs from puppy mills are housed in shockingly poor conditions with improper medical care and are often very sick and behaviorally troubled as a result. They are deceptive and making customers think they are buying from an honest and safe pet store, or through the classified ads. They will only continue to operate until people stop supporting them. Another thing, the cost of adopting from the shelter goes towards helping the shelter. They can buy food, necessary medicines, beds, toys, and other needed items. It’s comforting to know that the adoption fees go towards helping other animals in need.
