Flora and Dexter
Flora is a 100-pound malamute that could tower over her feline companion, 20-year-old Dexter. The duo has been best friends since they were rescued by Best Friends Animal Society and both adopted by the Williams family of Kanab, Utah.
But Flora's old friend took a turn for the worse and died two years later, leaving a hole in her heart. Flora’s family though she may never recover from the loss. "Flora was beyond heart-broken," Jill Williams says. "She spent many weeks outside, howling and depressed. It was really sad." The once-cuddly dog became alone and suffered attachment issues. Being a rescue dog, her first home was a bad one. The family explains, "She was extremely shy but over time, became the matriarch of our family," Williams says. "And her calm, sweet disposition was just what our family needed."
The family wasted no time trying to help Flora. They adopted two young cats from Best Friends Animal Society again, but they weren’t quite the cuddling kind; at least not enough to heal the ache Flora was still feeling. So, the family had to think and go smaller.
It turned out that heartbroken Flora needed the love from four kittens. The four felines, Iggy, Bowie, Roxy, and Glamour, need a foster family after being rescued by Best Friends. A room was prepared in one of the children’s bedrooms. Out of all four of them, Iggy was brave enough to approach Flora, and soon the other three followed.
"Iggy was the first brave boy," Williams says. "He went right up to Flora and sniffed her nose. She gently brought her face down to meet his and got a huge smile on her face." They all came together. But, the family does not plan to keep the kittens long term. But do not worry, Flora will not be without furry companions for long. She can probably expect another batch of rescued babies in the future.
