Watch Your Pet Around 4th of July

In a 2013 study by the University of Bristol’s School of Veterinary Sciences, fireworks were the common trigger in dogs for fearful behavior. Some responses included: trembling, shaking, hiding, and destruction. My dog tends to hide under the bed throughout the night. But, July 4th isn’t the only time she hides; a few days before and after people are still setting of Black Cats or Bottle Rockets. So typically my dog is in hiding for almost a week. Of course, one of the ways we help her is keeping her inside. We’re not monsters, we’re not gonna make her go outside to face her fears- it doesn't work that way.

Ways to Help Your Pooch

Experts from the Humane Society emphasize the importance of keeping your dog indoors on firework-heavy days. This can help them from running away, or a radio/television can provide good noise distraction. Our dog would hurt herself just to get away. You could talk with your veterinarian about the possibility of giving your pet a mild sedative. There are a variety of options that could help treat your dog’s firework phobia; pheromones and melatonin are a couple. If your pooch lets you, cuddling may help soothe them. A weighted vest is another option. Dr. Temple Grandin, professor of animal sciences, advises using an Anxiety Wrap or ThunderShirt. Putting on the wrap for 20-30 minutes, removing it for a similar period, and then reapplying it may provide some comfort to your pet. Some theories lead to the dog's environment as the factor for their fear of fireworks, but recent research would also suggest it’s the dog's breed. Either way, your dog is scared, they should trust and feel protected by you.
