Ways You May Be Hurting Your Dog
Dogs are the best. There is a reason they are known as ‘man’s best friend.’ They fill your life with so much joy, loyalty, love, and happy memories. There is something about this species that makes you want to do the very best for them. But doing the best for them can also mean that you are hurting them without even knowing it.Nobody wants to admit that they are hurting their dog's feelings. So how can you recognize what you are doing and how can you change it?
Emotional Scars
Things we think are harmless can be hurtful or terrifying to your dog. Here is a list of ways you are unknowingly hurting your dog’s feelings.- Not Paying Attention to Them- There are times when you get home tired after a long day and want nothing to do with your dog. Rejecting or ignoring your dogs attempts to give affection can result in depression. These animals are happy to see you and are eager to show you how much they love you. To them, you are their whole world and they anticipate affection from their “pack.” This can mean 15 to 20 minutes of cuddle time, a short walk, or playtime.
- Inconsistency with Rules or Training- Dogs learn early. It’s important for you to introduce rules and for them to learn what is expected of them, it’s even more important for you to be consistent with these rules. If they are taught that it’s a big no-no to sleep on your bed, don’t make it okay for them to sleep with you while you are not feeling well and then punish them the next time they decide to hop on for a nap. Be consistent! Don’t change the rules per your convenience. Don’t cause confusion.
- Accidents in the House- Whether your dog is housebroken or not, please don’t rub their noses in it! If you can’t hold it for 6 to 8 hours, why expect them to. Bathroom accidents are due to the long absence of a toilet break for your pet. So don’t punish your pet for accidentally peeing or pooping in the house. And especially don’t rub their noses in it as a punishment! Doing this won’t teach them to go outside, it will just teach them to fear you.
- Punishing Them Due to Their Fears- Independence Day has passed and is one holiday that can cause anxiety in your dog. Loud noises from the fireworks can cause your pet to run and hide. The last thing you want to do is ‘make your dog face its fear.’ Vehicles, vacuum cleaners, or certain floor coverings can be terrifying to them. There are signs your dog will give you if they feel in danger and the best thing you can do is remove them from the situation or what they are afraid of. Yelling will only escalate the situation.
