Take Your Cat for a Walk

It does sound strange, taking your cat for a walk. But it is possible. We are used to the idea of domesticated canines being the only mammals that can be walked. It’s time for us to realize that leashes are not just for dogs anymore. Recently, there are more and more animals are seen as great walking companions, such as ducks, goats, lizards, rats, pigs. One great household pet you should consider is your cat.

Cats are better known as natural hunters that like to knock objects off your table or lazy pets that ignore you. But did you know that your cat can benefit from daily walks? I’m not talking about just hanging out outside, but actual walks on a leash. Cats enjoy a good walk like dogs do, they take in all the smells, sounds, and sights. It can take some practice for your cat to get used to a leash, it won’t be like walking a dog. You should at least give them a chance to warm up to their outdoor strolls.

Where to Start

Here are some benefits and ways to help your feline friend discover the world around them:

It’s best to start them young. If you really want to train your cat to walk with a leash, it would be smart to train them while they are young. It’s better to get a routine established while they are kittens.
Train them indoors first! It’s for their own safety. Leave your cat with the leash/harness at home so they can play with it and get used to it. Make sure the harness fits them and they feel comfortable in it. And then let them walk around the house in it. If they freak out, at least they are home and safe.
Don’t overwhelm them. When you feel confident that your cat is ready, take them somewhere that won’t overstimulate them. Don’t take them somewhere where it is loud or full of people and other animals. Try your yard first. Let them make their way outside on their own allowing them to sniff around.

Outdoor exploring with your cat helps them tap into their natural instincts and will help them live a longer, healthy life. Keeping your cat indoors can lead to boredom and unwanted actions like scratching or urinating on furniture. Walking with your cat increases your bond with them and increases their territory.

Good Breeds to Consider

If you are interested in adding to your family and feel you may want to take your furry feline on family walks, here is a list of cat breeds that are ideal for that. These breeds will make it more possible for easy training than other breeds, but there is no guarantee and their willingness will vary.

  • Ragdoll Cats
  • Abyssinian
  • Bengal Cat
  • Burmese
  • British Shorthair
  • Korat

You should do more research on how to train your cat to accept a harness and leash. Remember it will take time and practice, but the outcome will be rewarding for the both of you.
